      Hi 585amph45,

      Good question. A creation starts with an idea, so it is important to take note of your idea before you forget (it happens!).

      Once I have my idea written down, I start to narrow down potential designs that may or may not work. Once I have a clearer idea of how the design would look like, it is time to read. I try to find similar designs/ideas that people did in the past in both books and journal articles. It is important to see what people have done in the past so you can improve their designs, and also avoid making the same mistakes they made, if something went wrong with them.

      Once this step is completed, it is time for some calculations. This is where maths, physics and principles of engineering become very useful. After this, we usually make a computarised design using CAD software and then, if wanted, we could go to the lab and manufacture it.
